Valley of the Sun Clean Cities Coalition
Who we are
We are a free-standing non-profit 501(c)(3), one of over 75 Clean Cities Coalitions across the US designated by the US Department of Energy. Our mission is to reduce the use of petroleum motor fuel for cleaner air and to improve energy security. The Valley of the Sun Clean Cities Coalition was incorporated in 2003 with the goal of reducing the use of petroleum fuels here in Arizona. Stakeholders such as APS, SRP and the cities of Phoenix and Scottsdale recognized a need for an independent organization to address alternative fuel and sustainability issues in the metro Phoenix area. With the help of these stakeholders and our founding director Bill Sheaffer, VSCCC was formed and designated by the US Department of Energy as an independent Clean Cities Organization. Since then VSCCC has gone on to become one of the nation’s leading Clean Cities Coalition.
Our Mission
We are dedicated to advancing the environmental, energy and economic security of Central and Northern Arizona by advocating and participating in practices that promote clean domestic energy and reduce dependence on conventional petroleum-based fuels.
“We are designated by the US Department of Energy to reduce the use of high emission motor fuels. The goal is to reduce air pollution as well as water, soil and noise pollution created by gasoline and diesel fuels. To this end, we promote Alternative Fuels, Mass Transit, and Improved Travel Efficiency.”
— Bill Sheaffer, Executive Director (Retired)
Our Board
Our board consists of members of Arizona Public Service, Arizona State University, City of Phoenix, City of Scottsdale, Mesa Utilities, Salt River Project, Southwest Gas, Maricopa County Air Quality Department, and other Phoenix area business owners.
Who we work with
We work closely with state and national entities to further our mission of reducing the use of petroleum fuels in the state of Arizona. We have a working relationship with ADOT, and Arizona Department of Administration (AZDOA). We have associations with The US Department of Energy, and the National Renewable Energy Labs. We also regularly collaborate with the other Clean Cities Coalitions across the US. These are just a few of the many other organizations we are grateful to be able to work with towards the common goal of reducing emissions and creating a cleaner, more sustainable future.
